Essential QLD Paperwork for Selling a Car to a Wrecker (Checklist)

Document 1: Proof of Identity (Photo ID)

This is the non-negotiable step to prevent fraudulent or illegal sales.

• Requirement: You must present a valid form of government-issued photographic identification.

• Best Option: Your current Australian Driver’s Licence (QLD or interstate).

• Acceptable Alternative: Passport, or a similar government ID (along with proof of current address, like a utility bill).

Document 2: Proof of Ownership (The Title Trail)

You need to show clear evidence that you are the legal, registered operator of the vehicle.

• Requirement: The most recent registration certificate (even if expired), or official TMR documents listing you as the owner.

• What if I Lost the Rego Papers? Don’t stress! If the car has been unregistered for years and the papers are long gone, you can often use a previous Transfer of Registration document, an official insurance payout statement (if it was a write-off), or contact TMR to verify ownership via the VIN.

Document 3: The Notice of Disposal (NOD) or Sale Receipt

When selling a scrap car to a licensed wrecker, the method of documenting the sale depends on whether the vehicle is still registered.

Option A: For Unregistered Vehicles (Most Common)

  • Your full name and signature.

  • The exact date and time of the sale.

  • The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN)—this is your safety net!

  • Our Motor Dealer Licence Number (Aplus Car Removal is a licensed buyer).

  • A statement confirming the car is sold “AS IS, Unregistered.”

Option B: For Currently Registered Vehicles

• The Solution: If the car is still registered, you must lodge a Notice of Disposal (NOD) with TMR immediately.

• Why? This tells TMR that you are no longer the owner, preventing you from receiving tickets, tolls, or fines incurred by the new operator (or while the vehicle is being towed).

Document 4: The Plate Surrender Form (and Refund!)

This final administrative step is purely for your financial benefit and peace of mind.

• What to Do: If your car has QLD registration plates on it, you must remove them and hand them in at a Transport and Main Roads Customer Service Centre or an authorized agency (like a QGAP office).

• The Refund: TMR will process a refund for any unused portion of the registration period (minus a small admin fee), which can often put a few extra dollars back in your pocket.

• The Legal Safety Net: Surrendering the plates is the final, undeniable proof to the Queensland government that you have ended your legal association with that vehicle’s identity.

Crucial Tip: Always obtain a receipt from TMR when you hand in your plates. Keep this document with your Bill of Sale for your records.

Do I need a Roadworthy Certificate (RWC) or Safety Certificate?

No. A Roadworthy Certificate is only required when you transfer the registration of a registered vehicle to a private buyer in QLD. When you sell an old, junk, or scrap car to a licensed dealer/wrecker, you are not transferring the registration; we are purchasing the asset for wrecking or dismantling. We buy it AS IS.

What about Outstanding Finance (PPSR)?

If there is outstanding finance on the vehicle (a loan, lease, or chattel mortgage), it will be listed on the Personal Property Securities Register (PPSR). As a licensed buyer, we cannot legally purchase a car with clear outstanding finance.

What if I can’t be there for the pickup?
